Networking Reception on Monday, May 30

Our annual reception at NAFSA will be held on Monday, May 30 from 6 PM to 9 PM, at Tamayo, 1400 Larimer St. Located less than a half mile away from the Convention Center and within walking distance, Tamayo features carefully crafted bold Mexican flavors rooted in tradition yet adventuring into contemporary tastes, similar to acclaimed Chef/Owner Richard Sandoval’s Maya Restaurant in New York City.  Join us for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a taco bar on the beautiful rooftop terrace in the heart of Downtown Denver on historic Larimer Street.  The cost is $95 per person.

PSY 100 Introductory Psychology with Dr. Patrick Garrigan

Course Description: How does a baby learn to walk, talk, and recognize her mother’s face? Why do we dream? What is stress, and how can you reduce the stress in your life? These are just a few questions that we will explore in Introductory Psychology.  Psychology is a broad discipline that investigates thought processes, feelings, and actions. Topics that will be covered in this course include: child development, motivation, memory, emotions, group dynamics, and psychological disorders. Studying abroad in Greece will give us the opportunity to examine first-hand how this unique culture influences human behavior. What psychological constructs are universal? When and why do we see cultural differences? Contents of this course have direct application to a number of related disciplines, such as: legal studies, teaching, marketing, business administration, biology, English literature, politics, and criminal justice. POL 321 Religion & American Politics with Dr. Francis Graham Lee Course Description: Religion and American Politics examines the unique role of religion in American public life, the legal-constitutional issues that arise, its effect on voting behavior, and future developments arising from the rise of Evangelicals, decline of Main Line Churches, and the transformation of the Catholic Church caused by the rise of the Hispanics.

PHL 355: Philosophical Issues in Christian Doctrine with Dr. Joseph Corabi

Course Description: The primary purpose of this course will be to investigate the internal coherence of Christianity–that is, whether we can make sense of Christian doctrine as a logically consistent body of claims about God, human beings, and the relationship between the two that “hangs together” in a plausible way.  As part of the course, we will visit a number of sites in and around Rome that have played a major role in the historical development of Christianity. ENG 449 Travel Writing: Rome with Dr. April Lindner

Course Description: In Travel Writing–Rome, we will use our travels in Italy as a lens through which to explore the elements of creative nonfiction in general and travel writing in particular.  The places we go, the people we meet, and the things we see and do along the way will provide the subject matter for your writing. You will keep a journal, do in-class invention exercises, and write three full-length travel essays.  We will also be reading travel memoirs as models of effective travel writing.  A large portion of our class will be spent workshopping, which means we read each other’s essays and give constructive feedback.  A portfolio of your revised writing will be due after the study tour is over.

MGT 120 Essentials in Management OR IBU 370 International Topics with Dr. Stephen Porth

Course Description: This course is an introduction to management and international business, focusing on the management functions of planning, leading, organizing and controlling. Contemporary theories, principles and practices of effective management will be discussed. The course will emphasize the macro (environmental) level of management and include the behavioral and micro levels as well. Since the course is taught in Rome, we will emphasize the European Union and especially Italy by exploring two interrelated issues: (1) the interpersonal, and especially cultural, dimensions of management in Europe and Italy, and (2) the strategic dimensions of managing in Europe and Italy. We will take advantage of our setting in Rome by visiting companies and government organizations in Italy as a way to understand the theory and practice of management.

ITA 306: The Roman Experience with Professor Fulvia Serra Eligible Students: ITA 202 level proficiency or above Course Description: The purpose of this course is to improve students’ oral and written command of Italian through an intensive full-immersion experience. The course is organized thematically around two main areas: issues in contemporary Italian society and Roman political and social landscapes. Students will read accounts of recent events that took place in Rome from 1945 to our days. They will also read daily newspaper articles on local cultural and social issues. While visiting the sites where the events took place students will be asked to comment on their observations both in writing and in group conversation. They will acquire a very personal appreciation of Rome and will formulate oral and written analyses on social, historical and political issues. This will allow them to create a spatial and visual connection with the extensive study of modern and contemporary Italian history that is part of their curriculum at SJU.

Course Description: The history of China since 1976. Major topics covered will be the death of Mao and the end of the Cultural Revolution; the opening of relations with the United States; Deng Xiaoping’s rise; opening and reform; China’s “economic miracle”; the one-child policy; the 1989 democracy movement and its aftermath; China’s challenging rise as a global economic and political power; the environmental challenge accompanying China’s economic development; and the Communist Party’s strategies and tactics to maintain power.

MHC 221/MHC 655 Workforce Diversity with Dr. Lucy Ford Course Description: Managing diversity is becoming increasingly important to contemporary organizations and is likely to become even more critical in the future as the population and workforce become even more heterogeneous, and organizations increasingly do business across the globe.  As these changes occur, a strong emphasis is being placed on inclusion in the workplace as a moral imperative and as a business competitiveness issue.   Managing an inclusive environment means creating a workplace that respects and embraces differences, recognizing the unique contributions that individuals from all walks of life can make, and creating a work environment that maximizes the potential of all employees. A key element in driving inclusion is being open, aware and committed to integrating diversity into the business. It is important that every perspective, viewpoint and idea is welcomed, shared and considered. An effective inclusion initiative equips every employee and manager with knowledge and tools for becoming a mindful member and effectual leader of diverse teams. With that said, immersion into a foreign culture is an ideal opportunity for students to develop openness, awareness, and commitment to inclusivity.

PROGRAM_DESCRIPTION: Brisbane is the capital of the Sunshine State of Queensland and, with 1.1 million people, is Australia’s third largest city. Lying at the heart of the most diverse and popular vacation region in Australia, Brisbane has a subtropical climate with average highs of 70 degrees in winter and 85 in summer. The city’s imposing skyline rises above the Brisbane River, and its streets offer all the excitement of a modern cosmopolitan center: museums, cafes, shopping, and nightlife. While the city boasts ultra-modern high-rises, it has also preserved the charm of its 19th century architectural legacy. Brisbane is not only a vacation destination, it is a thriving commercial and cultural center. The city has so much to offer: beaches, river walks, gardens and wildlife parks with the country’s larg­est population of koalas. PROGRAM__HIGHLIGHTS: ACADEMICS Australian Catholic University (ACU) provides a low faculty-to-student ratio, unlike most large public Australian universities. You will be part of a friendly, small campus where you’ll have access to excellent student support services. Though founded as a Catholic college, ACU is a public university open to all, providing quality education. The Brisbane cam­pus, located in the suburb of Banyo, is 50 minutes from the city center and easily reached by public transportation. The campus has quality teaching facilities and state-of-the-art computer labs. Students will be awarded Fairfield credit and grades for work com­pleted at ACU. Grades will be reported on your transcript and will be computed into your Fairfield GPA. You can take a full load of three courses plus an internship while at ACU, and will earn 16 Fairfield University credits. PROGRAM_DESCRIPTION: WHY BRAZIL? Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world both in area and population and has the 7th largest world economy. It has a rich heritage derived from the Portuguese culture but also strongly influenced by African, Indigenous Amerindians, and non-Portuguese European cultures especially German and Italian. Brazil represents a unique culture within the context of its South American neighbors, which is reflected by its own language, Brazilian Portuguese. Campos dos Goytacazes, the third largest city in the state of Rio de Janeiro, is located about 3 hours northeast of Rio de Janeiro. Campos, as it is commonly called, is one of the most important commercial cities in the State of Rio de Janerio. Sugar cane is a major product of the region and the deep-water fields of the Campos basin form the largest Brazilian oil reserves. Thus, Campos’ nickname, “The Capital of Sugar and Oil” is justly earned. The beautiful tropical climate provides year round outdoor living and with the Brazilian Atlantic ocean beaches only thirty minutes away it is a perfect location to study and experience the Brazilian culture.

PROGRAM__HIGHLIGHTS: ACADEMIC OVERVIEW Students take courses at the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense (UENF). Located in Campos, UENF was founded in 1993 and established as an innovative model formed around interdisciplinary laboratories and research centers. The Brazilian Ministry of Education listed UENF as one of the most highly ranked universities for its quality of programs, faculty, and student population. UENF classes are taught by highly qualified faculty, most holding the highest degree in their field, with strong research interests and credentials. Currently, UENF has 4,000 students. UENF’s focus on interdisciplinary science education includes 13 graduate programs and 17 undergraduate programs housed within four schools. Three of its four centers of academic excellence focus on various scientific disciplines while the fourth is centered on humanities and social science research. This semester-long program begins with an intensive immersion into the culture and environment of the Atlantic rainfore
st coast of Rio de Janiero state. With its development in agriculture, business, energy, and exports, the landscape is changing rapidly. After spending four weeks developing a level of comprehension of both written and conversational Portuguese, students will dive into their self-chosen
suite of courses that are intended to immerse them in the issues both positive and negative of the rapidly changing Atlantic coast ecosystem surrounding UENF. A wide range of classes from the UENF curriculum have been chosen to allow students to self design a challenging but incredibly rich experience under the tropical sun! Students will earn Fairfield University credit and grades, which will be reported on a Fairfield University transcript. Student may take up to 18 undergraduate credits.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Loyola University Maryland and Newcastle University have expanded their long standing partnership in the establishment of the Loyola University Maryland Center at Newcastle University. Loyola established a relationship with Newcastle University in the mid1990s. Loyola will be offering students from American universities across the US the opportunity to study abroad through The Center beginning spring 2014, allowing American undergraduate students the chance study in the British town, Newcastle upon Tyne. Because students will be studying through Loyola University Maryland, they will receive a Loyola transcript with American credits and grades, making the credits easily transferable to other American universities. This is a fully packaged program that includes Loyola tuition and fees, housing, airfare, and many other program benefits. Newcastle has world-renowned Science/Biomedical Schools as well as excellent Business and Humanities schools. There are about 20,000 students at Newcastle University with an international population of approximately 5,000 students. This program works best for Science majors but is open to students in all degree programs.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: This Loyola Center at Newcastle provides many program benefits. Students have the opportunity to study abroad for the fall semester, spring semester, or a full year. Ubuntu: Fordham in Pretoria, A Service-Learning Program

In the past few decades, South Africa’s transformation has captured the attention of people around the world, and in recent years students have, in increasing numbers, sought educational opportunities abroad in this emerging democratic nation. The vast challenges faced by a society attempting to provide equal access to opportunity and the energy with which South Africans have committed themselves to bring about meaningful changes, provide an ideal environment for a study abroad program. Ubuntu, the Fordham in Pretoria program, offers you a structured and supportive environment for study and engagement with South African people and their history while also offering an array of opportunities to do valuable service and to reflect on your experience.

Based at the University of Pretoria, the leading research university in South Africa, and in collaboration with The Jesuit Institute of South Africa, Fordham in Pretoria offers students opportunities to do elective or major work while being active in service learning. Structured reflection sessions throughout the semester allow participants to consider the complexities and challenges facing Pretoria specifically and South Africa generally.

REQUIRED COURSES

All participants will take a Core Course that explores the relevant historical and socio-economic issues impacting the local communities, specific demographics and South Africa. In addition, a required module in Sociology, Poverty, and Human Development provides an overview of the macro socio-economic and political context for development in achieving the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals as well as a forum for considering and analyzing poverty reduction strategies and their relevance in various community settings. From both a theoretical and experiential perspective, Ubuntu students will explore and critically discuss the place and role of participation, capacity building, empowerment and partnerships in sustainable development. They will also consider various ways of approaching community engagement and service-learning activities.

Each participant will also take two additional courses (modules) from one or more of the following departments at the University of Pretoria:

SERVICE-LEARNING

The Service-Learning component of the program will be coordinated by the University of Pretoria. The practice lecturer for the sociology module will work closely with the program’s Academic Coordinator to develop schedules that provide participants a once-a-week full-day opportunity to meaningfully engage with the local community and do service of value.

In addition to the regular monthly service-learning reflection sessions, and as a complement to course work done at the University of Pretoria, the program will feature two reflective weekend retreats in North Pretoria as well as weekly one-on-one spirituality sessions designed to encourage participants to consider their academic and service-learning experience, in relation to larger questions about life, justice, faith and personal beliefs. Erasmus Community is a semi-rural settlement of roughly 10,000 people about an hour away from Pretoria with a community organization led by local residents actively engaged with projects in primary education, computer training, nutrition, childcare, agriculture, bridge building and other construction projects.

The University of Pretoria Center for the Study of AIDS sponsors a series of programs to better understand the complexities of the HIV&AIDS epidemic(s) in South Africa. In collaboration with the University of Pretoria, African parlamentarians and international organizations, the Center has developed a range of interventions to address the social drivers, and social consequences, of HIV&AIDS. These include community-level rights, gender, stigma, sexuality and youth programs.

Mercy House is a residence for South African women escaping violent relationships and non-South African women who have been victims of trafficking. The house is run by the Sisters of Mercy, a Religious Women’s Congregation founded by Catherine McAuley in 1831 in Dublin, Ireland.

Iona Convent School is a primary and secondary school committed to making education accessible to children from diverse skilled working-class backgrounds from previously disadvantaged areas of the northwest and northern Gauteng provinces. Originally founded by the Sisters of Mercy, the school is now entirely run by lay people and has five hundred students.
